California Accident Reconstruction

GrayMatter Group provides California accident reconstruction for attorneys, insurers, corporations, and public agencies. Our experts serve the Bay Area, Southern California, and assignments elsewhere in the state as part of our nationwide practice. The firm’s principal office is in Hebron, Kentucky; this page describes California service coverage.

Start with the location of the evidence

For a California matter, identify both the collision location and the present location of every involved vehicle. A scene in one part of the state may be associated with a vehicle stored elsewhere, particularly after towing, shipment, or return to a fleet. Inspection planning should account for the custodian, access arrangements, and any approaching release or repair date.

Provide the specific street, direction of travel, and nearby reference points. For freeway incidents, distinguish the main lanes from ramps and connecting roads. Photographs and reports can be compared with that location before developing a proposed scene examination.

Freeway collisions and multiple impacts

Where several vehicles or contacts are involved, the order of events matters. Our review compares damage relationships, documented positions, scene evidence, video, and available electronic records. A final position does not necessarily identify where a vehicle was when the first contact occurred.

For commercial vehicles, establish whether the tractor and trailer remain together and whether other units have been substituted. Our truck reconstruction services address vehicle inspection and collision dynamics. Electronic-data retrieval depends on the particular vehicle systems and retained events.

Urban streets, motorcycles, and pedestrians

Bay Area and Southern California assignments may involve intersection movements, turning conflicts, or vulnerable road users. A useful scope identifies the disputed movement and the evidence needed to evaluate it. Signal information, approach photographs, original recordings, and measurements may address different parts of the question.

See our motorcycle and pedestrian reconstruction services for the distinct methods and limitations relevant to those collisions. Camera footage must be evaluated for perspective and timing rather than treated as a direct speed measurement.

California assignment intake

Send the collision date, exact location, vehicle details, photographs, available reports, original video, prior inspections, and downloads. Identify the technical questions and deadlines. If the record is incomplete, we can discuss which additional evidence would be useful before a conclusion is developed.

We explain assumptions and uncertainty alongside findings. Review our team’s qualifications and CVs, explore our broader accident reconstruction services, or call 513-259-0296. Contact GrayMatter Group for statewide California assignments and time-sensitive preservation inquiries.

Make a large case file reviewable

For a California matter with several vehicles or evidence custodians, a simple inventory is useful. Identify each vehicle, its report number or designation, the source of its photographs, and the location of any inspection or download file. Keep the original names and dates on the records so a reviewer can trace a statement back to the supporting material.

If different reports use different labels for the same vehicle, explain the relationship. The purpose is to prevent an image, statement, or measurement from being assigned to the wrong unit. The inventory can also identify which vehicles are no longer available and which records are still being requested.

Define the purpose of a demonstrative

A diagram or exhibit should answer a specific communication need. It may show documented positions, compare accounts, or explain the assumptions in an analysis. These are different purposes. Tell us the question the exhibit needs to address and provide the materials supporting each position or event it depicts.

Original evidence should remain distinguishable from annotations and illustrative details. If a position is estimated, the exhibit should not make it appear measured. If the sequence contains an unresolved interval, a presentation should preserve that uncertainty rather than imply that every movement has been established.

Coordinate the next examination

When access is time-sensitive, provide the custodian’s contact information and the known release or repair schedule. Tell us about examinations already completed or arranged, and identify the person who can authorize the proposed work. Those details help focus the discussion on the evidence that can still be examined.

For a review of an existing opinion, send the full report and its supporting exhibits, calculations, and references. A conclusion on its own does not show how the author reached it. The review can then distinguish a disagreement about assumptions from a gap in the underlying evidence and identify the next useful step.
